What’s it with this winter stuff?

What’s it with this winter stuff? …you know, that time of year that the little flowers just do not bloom?   Sitting here just a few days before the winter’s solstice, I was perusing shots to backup and take off of the slowing laptop when I pulled this little beauty up.  Nice little Shooting Star shot early in the autumn this year. There were great numbers of them all along the stream bed on the warm day Ruth and I went wildflower hunting.  I certainly got the jeans grimy

Sometimes, ya gotta get dirty…

Sometimes, ya gotta get dirty.. If you really want the shot!!! One day I was at the UK Arboretum shooting a shot of a crazy wild onion.  I just loved it.  Had corkscrew twists and turns, but to shoot it, I had to lay on the ground.  A few dozen yards away there was a lady with her baby in a buggy walking.  She turned around and saw me laying on the ground, and started calling out for help and was ready to call 911.   She pushed her

Lovely… and Lonely

Lovely… and Lonely …and I’m sure they were the only ones in the whole Red River Gorge! That was these wonderful Yellow Lady Slippers. Ruth and I meandered, as we so often do, to the Red River Gorge.  It was early chilly spring, and flowers were our destination.  We were fortunate enough to meet up with our dear friend John Snell (http://www.johnsnellphoto.com/) who knows the RRG like the back of his hand… he should, he’s published two wonderful photo books exhibiting the wonderful seasons and senses of the Gorge.

The Object of Fine Art Photography…

The Object of Fine Art Photography…        …is not to recreate a scene,                but rather to recreate an emotion. That is something I guess when pondered a bit, most of us who attempt fine art photography, and especially those of us who choose nature as our means of expression, would not take so much issue with. But when you look under the hood, perhaps there is often a divergence. That divergence comes in the words “did you Photoshop it?” My answer

MY kinda streaming video

This… this is MY kinda streaming video.   Not the video on the iPhone, on the Android Tablet, on the Surface computer, but a real, live, cold, wet, wonderful stream… And yes, I have video!   Ruth, Shari and I ventured out on Wednesday of our 2015 Steamboat Spring Colorado excursion and hiked along a wonderful stream.    Every bend in the trail made us want to stop and shoot another shot, whether the stream, a flower, a rocky hillside, a broad mountain vista.  Every moment was one to

Nothing ventured, nothing gained…

Nothing ventured, nothing gained… We ventured… and gained a rare one, the Snow Trillium! _____________________________________________________________ Ruth and I had dinner on Friday night and pretty much agreed that both since we were pretty beat after a long week and since the weather looked kinda bleak and stormy for Saturday, we wouldn’t venture out. Saturday morning… she texted me with “Yawwwwnnnnn.”   It was clear how she was planning on spending the day.  Work Week Recovery!  Yep.  Sounded good, but… but… Shortly, I texted back “Weather looks like it’s gonna miss

Snowy days and Sundays

Snowy days and Sundays always make me smile.. Apologies to the Carpenters, but snowy days are beautiful days, and often that hike out in the wood is on a Sunday. So… there ya go! This was taken in 2014 and I saw it on my screen saver today and revisited the shot. Really loved everything going on it, but more than that, it’s the mood of the shot that I really like. This was taken on the second hike Ruth and I took together, along a chilly Red River Gorge

Ahh… those Golden Hours!

Ahhhh… Those Golden Hours… You know, the special light and moments we who manage to get up way earlier than the crack of dawn or stay up way later than sunset get to enjoy! Ruth, Laura Harris, John Snell and I ventured to the Red River Gorge one special afternoon.   It was the oncoming night of the blood moon and the full lunar eclipse.  What an event.  Won’t happen again till… well, let’s just say it’s unlikely we’ll be trekkin’ to the Auxier Ridge Saddle to marvel as we

Sometime Springtime

Sometime Springtime… Soon?   While I enjoy all the seasons… yes, I do love winter, but I am looking forward to spring in my Kentucky woods. Ruth Oremus, Terry Bailey and I wandered down to Rockcastle County one chilly April morning.  Anglin Falls was our destination.  Of course, we had to stop many times along the way to shoot various things; a roadside creek, and old man at a yard sale, an abandoned cabin…  you know, the stuff we photogs always look to shoot.   Ultimately, we did make it

Don’t let ’em do it!

Please, Don’t let ’em do it!   Leave it alone!!!   Too late… it’s already started, but maybe you can get there before it’s overrun. I’m talking about Flat Lick Falls in Jackson County.   It is a WONDERFUL falls and there are rock formations that are just unbelievable.   It’s a nature lovers and photographers paradise, but… Good meaning people are going to, no, are destroying it by adding a pavilion, shelters, picnic sites, overlooks, bridges over the creek, campgrounds and so help me.. RV Hookups.   There goes

Above the Mill

Sometimes, the old ways are better… As in some of the old fashioned mill ground products from Weisenberger Mill. My sister came into town and we had to go shooting for a bit in the countryside of the Bluegrass. It had been a while since I had ventured out into Scott County, so we headed that way just looking for anything that captured our eye. We pulled off the side of the road at Weisenberger Mill and started shooting around the mill and the South Elkhorn Creek. This mill has

High in the Rockies!

The best way to get high… in the Rockies!           On our Colorado Trip in 2015, we ventured to Dumont Lake, a small lake not far from Steamboat Springs.  There were folks fishing, canoeing and enjoying the amazing views around the lake.  The three of us burned a lot of film…um, filled up a lot of chip space there.  The wildflowers were abundant and the sun and sky was just perfect. We then mounted our rental Ford Edge and headed up a rutted gravel road which
