A lily, a glow, a new friend

After years of hiatus from shooting, I purchased my first “real”digital camera.   It was a Canon Rebel XT.  Pretty much a baseline DSLR, and I bought it used with a couple of lenses.  $300 bucks.  Not bad for a “starter kit.”  Instant love.  I was clickin’ everything in sight! I learned very fast that while it’s imperative to know composition, to understand light, to be able to capture a moment before your eye… contrary to what some would try to lead you to believe, EQUIPMENT IS IMPORTANT!!!  A lesson

Fishin’ Buddies

I frequent a nearby lake, Jacobson Lake, to shoot sunsets and the occasional Blue Heron, Green Heron or Black Crested Night Heron… usually some kind of nature or atmospheric type of shot.  These are what I like best and I think what I do best as as well.  I like the emotions that seeing nature in it’s splendor makes you feel. However, there was some splendor I spotted on the dock, and just had to shoot it.  It just said so very much.     and I don’t think I

A Colorado Chipmunk

While hiking in Colorado with Ruth and Shari, we crossed a bridge on our way to a high falls.   The picture taking had been less than spectacular to that point, but the views were nonetheless breathtaking. As we crossed the bridge something darted fast in front of us… a chipmunk. He stopped on a rock and looked at us expectantly.  I suspect he was wanting us to pay his bridge toll in cookies or bread crumbs! So we did just what you are never supposed to do, we “interacted

Golden Hour

As photographers, we know what golden hour is. It’s that precious hour surrounding sunup and sunset when the light is magic and the whole world transforms.   Wonderful reflections, warm tones and wide smiles. I have a cadre of friends who, like me, love to go shoot sunsets over the water at nearby Jacobson Park in Lexington KY.  On this night I was catching the fading of the sun as it headed to rest when a heron decided it was time for him to find a place to rest as

Cajun in Kentucky

Terry Bailey and I decided one afternoon to head downtown and see what might inspire and transpire.  We took pictures of steeples, old windows, old doors.  Shot shots of artistic graffiti, of cars whizzing by, of store fronts and fountains. But one thing Terry is especially good at is engaging just about anyone in conversation… and getting their image! We were walking about near the library and Terry started talking to a couple of folks, including this gentleman.  He told us about living in New Orleans ending up here in

Your own front yard

One day I was bemoaning the fact I didn’t have time to cruise on down to the Red River Gorge or wander out to Raven Run Nature Preserve and do some shooting.  The sky was perfect with white floss against a deep blue.   The temperature was perfect for hiking and I could almost hear the streams and waterfalls calling me, but… I had things I had to do and while I had a bit of time, I couldn’t spare the several hours it would take to make one of

Crazy Bud

One day as I was meandering by a small lake near my office I noticed what appeared to be a crazy looking bud. On closer inspection of the bud, and other plants nearby I realized it wasn’t a bud, but a Queen Anne’s lace flower gone to seed. With the colors around it and the lake as a backdrop, I had to pull my ever-present camera out and take a shot. The image I made came out, at least to my mind, amazing. Subsequently, I’ve seen many of these. I
