The zig-zag fence at Perryville Battlefield

A bright day, on a dark scene…

On one our our “gettin’ lost” ventures, Terry Bailey and I ended up at Perryville Battlefield State Historic Site, quite by accident. We took a fair number of shots and some were pretty good, if I do say so myself. This is the site of a Civil War battle that was fought on October 8, 1862. The Battle of Perryville had 4,220 Union and 3,401 Confederate casualties.  1,422 soldiers were killed in the battle and 5,534 were wounded during this intense battle.  After you look at those later passing from their injuries the death toll came to to 2,377.

There is a museum and several old canon there (one of which I will or have posted) and covers acres of the old battle site.

The shot here is of what I call, probably erroneously, a brick-a-brack fence, made by stacking split logs in a zig-zag manner. There are many of these in Kentucky, but mostly decorative rather than functional nowdays. This scene caught my eye with the field’s browns, the grassy greens, and the fence leading up to an old tree, which was undoubtedly there watching the battle as it unfolded those many years ago.

They have a re-enactment there every year. I’ve attended it and it is quite the spectacle, and will make you think a lot about what it took to make our country what it is. The price we paid internally to become one nation.

We are one nation undivided… and that war is what brought that back.
