Through the meadow and into the woods

Through the meadow and into the woods… Our adventure in Colorado in 2015 led us up many interesting light-flooded paths.   The wonderful aspen are always a pleasure for us as photographers, so Ruth, Shari and I took a full helping of this medicine for the soul.   This particular spot called out to us as the meadow ahead was bathed in light and then the path led us deeper into the wonderful woods, a mix of  pines and aspens. Every where we turned there was something to be seen, to

Trappers Lake View

Turn a corner, and then wow….   In late summer 2015 Ruth and I joined Sheri Dutton in Colorado to spend a week shooting the high altitudes!  One day, we wandered very high and long and ended up at a place called Trappers Lake Lodge.  The trip was suggested by the Fish and Wildlife folks in Steamboat Springs… really great folks.  Trappers is at 9,400 ft above sea level and the mountains there are incredible.   They have “primitive” cabins and a restaurant… but from that base, they have guides

Atop Double Arch

Winter can be wonderful! It was a cold day, but crisp and clear.  Ruth and I set out for Double Arch in the Red River Gorge, one of our very favorite areas to hike in.   We didn’t get a particularly early start, as is not terribly unusual but we were determined! We met a few folks on their way out but was not a particularly busy trail as December had set in and gloves were the order of the day. We clambered up to Double Arch and enjoyed shooting some

That very moment

Sometimes you just have to be there…   Be there that very moment “it” happens. Ruth and I were on our way back to our Bluegrass from Columbus OH, and stopped riverside across from  Maysville KY.  We pulled over on the northern banks of the Ohio River to have a dinner we’d packed earlier. Of course, we started shooting!  There were wonderful shots to the west as the sun started dipping… shots of the city with the trains going along the banks on the KY side, shots of the sun setting

A Cave and a Cave…

You never know what you’ll discover… so go!!!   Sometimes… well, often, my friends and I just take off to somewhere and see where that leads.   Some of us know special places and on this trip Ruth knew where we should at least stop and see what we could shoot… Short Creek… The water from the creek flows out of a cave… a dozen dozen feet or so, with a dogleg between, then chortles back into another cave… HENCE… Short Creek. So Terry, Ruth and I spent the better part of

Red and Ruth

Home is where the heart is, and mine… is in nature… Ruth and I decided to reprise our first outing together, a November hike along the Red River and then up to Eagles Point Buttress.   This year, as in last, we were just a few weeks past prime for the fall leaves, but there were a few hanging on here and there. As we meandered upstream close to where we cut uphill, we found this nice pool with several wonderful huge boulders.   The light, the reflections, and the

Perryville Battlefield

A bright day, on a dark scene…   On one our our “gettin’ lost” ventures, Terry Bailey and I ended up at Perryville Battlefield State Historic Site, quite by accident. We took a fair number of shots and some were pretty good, if I do say so myself. This is the site of a Civil War battle that was fought on October 8, 1862. The Battle of Perryville had 4,220 Union and 3,401 Confederate casualties.  1,422 soldiers were killed in the battle and 5,534 were wounded during this intense battle.  After

A little pepper

So in my early playing around with my new digital camera, I wanted to try some still life /  food photography.   As I am somewhat of a wannabe chef or a foodie or what ever you want to call it, I thought starting out by doing a few shot in that arena would be fun! This shot took a bit of work to make it look like I saw it.   As I didn’t have great studio lighting or even a studio, this was attempted on a table with

All a-flitter

Another day, another “gettin’ lost” photo trek! Terry and I were wandering around Franklin County Backroads near the Elkhorn Creek and happened upon a fish hatchery.   We got out of the car and wandered around a bit, watching the geese and herons who littered the large pond areas.  Every waters edge we walked frogs jumped into the water with a croak and splash.  We had heard that there were often river otters pillaging the ponds, but didn’t get to see any this day.  It was a very bright day,

Too Many Miles

On one of my “gettin’ lost” adventures with Terry Bailey we wandered down around the Elkhorn Creek near Frankfort Ky.   We were coming up on the put-in for a canoe livery where the canoes and kayaks were lined up and stacked in a bright splash of color.   A truck with a trailer load of additional canoes was pulling in so we slowed to wait for them before we drove in to go down to the creek. As we waited, we looked off to the side and saw an old fence

Flower at Sunset

I was once again at the UK Arboretum, a favorite place to do a few quick shots at the end of the day.   I was wandering around with my photobud, Terry Bailey, when we rounded a corner at a tall rock wall and saw this wonderful hanging plant.   The sun was almost at the point of dropping out of sight, and the warm beams were casting almost horizontal warm orange beams into the flowers.   It was beautiful. We shot as fast as we could, taking turns trying

Downtown Fountain

While doing a shoot in downtown Lexington with my friend Terry Bailey, we stopped at a fountain we’ve both seen hundreds of times. But this time was different, we were looking at it with a photographers eye, not just the casual observance. As I walked around the fountain, contemplating how to shoot it, I saw the incredible color reflections on the water dampened brick sidewalk. I noticed the splashes of water as they hit the ground. I watched the colors dance and change and play. Then I tried to figure
